If you've been living under a rock all this while, you wouldn't know what an engine is. The engine is a fundamental part of a car which makes it move from one place to another. It consists of many parts and looks quite confusing to directly look at. I mean, it's HUGE and has many parts. It's better for me to "dumb it down" to a certain level so it can be easier for me to explain it to you. Now how do the wheels of the car turn? All cars have axles that connect 2 parallel wheels to each other with a rod of some sorts. Now this rod, gets its spinny energy from something called the "camshaft". Camshaft is basically a fancy word for "rod from the engine which gives power". Now, each engine is LARGE and made out of some sort of metal. You might have noticed that they have holes in them like this. These holes are cup holders. Just kidding. Those holes have cylinders inside them which keep popping out and in, just like those arcade games of whack-a-mole. The only difference is that these cylinders fire in a specific order. Now why do cars have fuel? The thing is, fuel and air blow up when there's electricity. Engines basically make small explosions inside them and push the cylinders with that force. The cylinders are connected to the camshaft, which is connected to the axle, which then, in turn, produces that sweet speeeeeeeeeeed. Let's look at the cylinders up close to give you an idea. Trust me, it's not as complicated as it looks.
Fuel and air go in from the top left, there's a small electric charge sent through the "spark plugs" on the top, and there's a mini explosion. The explosion pushes down the cylinder, moving the camshaft and the car. The smoke in the cylinder then goes out of the top right and into the exhaust pipe. THAT'S IT. The cylinders are arranged in different directions and configurations in different cars, which explains why you hear people saying stuff like "V6, V8 and straight fours" It simply shows the number of cylinders and the shape they're configures in. For example, V6 is an engine with 6 cylinders arranged in a V, and a straight 4 is an engine with 4 cylinders arranged in a straight line. So that's it! Congratulations, you've learnt the basics of an engine!
